Discover the most beautiful Scottish islands
If you are planning on visiting Scotland soon to undertake one of our famous long walks, we know that you are probably also looking for some great sights to see as part of your trip.
This month we share our top five most beautiful Scottish islands that are definitely worth putting on your itinerary – all of them offer something unique and interesting to see.
Isle of Skye
Hikers and climbers will know the Isle of Skye for its well-known and popular walk, the Old Man of Storr, which is undoubtedly the most famous walk on the island and is also one of the most photographed landscapes.
Created by a large ancient landslide, the Old Man is a large pinnacle of rock standing high and visible for miles around.
Once you have conquered the Old Man, there are plenty of other great sights to see on The Isle of Skye.
Well-known Eilean Donan Castle (which has starred in many movies) is a must visit along with beautiful Dunvegan Castle and its gardens, and the infamous Fairy Pools.
These pools see visitors from all over the world attempting to undertake wild swimming in its cold waters. For the less adventurous, Fairy Pools makes for some fantastic photos and backdrops.
Isle of Mull
Located off the west coast of Scotland in the Inner Hebrides, the Isle of Mull is a must visit if you love to see wildlife and enjoy exploring cute towns.
Accessible by ferry via Oban, Lochaline, and Kilchoan, the Isle can get remarkably busy during the summer months, however you cannot go wrong with a visit to Duart Castle, as well as undertaking a wildlife tour to spot eagles, seals, and red deer is a must.
Isle of Jura
With only a small population, the Isle of Jura sees visitors coming to discover its vast array of wildlife, majestic mountains, and many walking and hiking trails.
The Isle of Jura Distillery makes some great whiskies, and you can even take a boat tour to one of the world’s largest permanent whirlpools, the Corryvreckan Whirlpool.
Isle of Arran
The Isle of Arran is a large island that sports both mountains and beautiful beaches. But there is also loads to do for foodies and culture lovers – from visiting the Arran Distillery and Island Cheese Company, and a trip to Brodrick Castle, which is always a highlight.
Brodrick Castle offers several tours and a deep look into the history of the people that lived there, plus there are some great interactive activities to engage all ages. From Victorian games to the Isle Be Wild adventure park and the beautifully manicured gardens, this is always a firm favourite with visitors.
Barra
Located in the Outer Hebrides, Barra has some beautiful beaches, and even the island’s tiny airport is located on the beach (with planes landing between tides).
Make sure to visit Kisimul Castle or "Castle in the Sea," and take a wander around the galleries of Dualchas Heritage Centre.
Popular beaches include Seal Bay, Halaman Bay, and Tangasdale, and if you love being on the water, then why not try sea kayaking and paddleboarding, this is truly a wonderful way to experience Scotland's outer coast.
